NumberChords offers digital sheet music in number notation. Here you can read how the collection and the method came about.
How number notation works
In number notation every pitch has a fixed code, so you can see at once which note to play. Chords are written out clearly, so you recognise them at a glance. That way you can play psalms on the organ without having to read staff notation.
Each symbol stands for a fixed pitch, and its meaning does not change with the key. Start with the music preview to see the notation and listen before choosing a piece.
The story behind the collection
About ten years ago, I started playing from Johannes de Heer's books in number notation. Before long, I wanted to play a broader repertoire than just psalms and hymns, so I began transcribing sheet music into number notation. Over time, that grew into hundreds of handwritten pages.
Along the way, obstacles emerged: not every piece of written music could be translated directly into the existing number notation. After years of experimenting and refining, an improved number notation took shape, one that offers far more possibilities.
